Emily Thompson (Tinkadventures), qualified and experienced mountain leader, will take us through the basics of navigation in this three week online course.

This is week one of a three week programme. You will get 60 minutes of dedicated instruction within a 90 minute session, where you will be able to practically apply what you’ve learnt ready for when you want to get outdoors.

Week 1:

What’s on a map – recognising symbols

Compass Basics

Ask questions

Week 2:

Compass Confidence

Practicing skills

Ask questions

Week 3:

Going Digital

Ask questions

This course is for Womenclimb Supporters and Members.

This exclusive Womenclimb workshop will run on Zoom each Wednesday 6-7.30pm.

You will receive your Zoom invite via email. If you think you haven’t received your email, please check your spam/junk folder.

What do I get?

This session will equip you with the basic underpinning knowledge for the National Navigation Award Scheme Bronze award. This means that if you choose to join us face to face after lockdown, you will be able to gain your Bronze NNAS navigation award with one day of navigation, rather than two, so long as you complete the requirements of the theory-based parts of the award during our sessions and through your own independent practice.

Of course, you might want to come to simply learn and enjoy – that’s ok too!

You can join this session as a complete beginner. You will need:

A map, which you can buy online through Ordnance Survey

A compass

Computer or tablet

A Zoom account

Zoom app downloaded to your device

If you get a map of your local area, you can practice locally. Otherwise, if you would like to join us outdoors once lockdown is complete, for a practical session, please buy map OL1:

As with all Womenclimb events and workshops, you are responsible for your health, safety and taking responsibility for your participation. These sessions are NOT a substitute for face to face workshops and tuition. You will not be equipped to navigate out on the hills in the same way that you would be through a face to face session, but this will give you underpinning knowledge from a hillwalking expert who is qualified to teach the National Navigation Award Scheme.
