Women in Mountain Rescue: Becky Isles

Womenclimb want to encourage more women to see Mountain Rescue as something they can get involved in, as despite an increase in women in MR in the last 15 years they still represent less than 20% of team members.

I met up with Becky in a little cafe in Sowerby Bridge and over a brew we chatted about our experiences in Mountain Rescue, why she got involved and how she manages to fit it around her career working as an A&E Registrar.

Women in Mountain Rescue: Carina Humberstone

Womenclimb recognises the importance that Mountain Rescue volunteers play in ensuring that climbers and hillwalkers are educated and safe when enjoying the outdoors.  Womenclimb want to encourage more interested women to see Mountain Rescue as something they can get involved in.

Today we catch up with Carina Humberstone, from Buxton MRT to chat how she got involved in Mountain Rescue and teaching water rescue skills.

Women in Mountain Rescue: Judy Whiteside

Training course // Mindfulness 8-week programme

What is the training? This is an 8 week mindfulness training programme specifically designed for climbers (although non-climbers welcome!). It follows a mindfulness based stress reduction (MBSR) and mindfulness based cognitive therapy (MBCT) hybrid.   But what IS mindfulness? Mindfulness is a simple form of meditation that helps us develop...

Yoga Studio app// review

UPDATE:  In light of changes to the Yoga Studio App, please be aware that the app is no longer a one-time purchase app and operates on a subscription model.  Previous purchasers of the app have paid for the app and subsequently had their access revoked, subject to paying a monthly subscription.

We can no longer recommend the app on the basis that the fundamental basis of our original review has changed. Please see comments below, from customers.

Ever thought about taking up yoga as a way of improving your flexibility and core strength, but can't seem to get yourself to a class? There's loads of free yoga apps on the market for smart phones so we've reviewed Yoga Studio to see if paying for a yoga app is really worth it.

Ella Williams // Climber Bio

Ella Williams - Outdoor Instructor'Climbing for me is like a dance, when I am in the moment I don’t have to think about what I’m doing.'

Ella Williams is an outdoors instructor living in North Wales.  At the time of writing, she was 29 years old, born in 1987, having started rock climbing at the age of 26.  She is 5ft1 (155cm tall). We met Ella on a climbing weekend in north Wales in 2015, where she showed her love of sharing the outdoors with others.  This is a really beautiful piece of writing, enjoy.

Climbing to ease back pain

Stunning scenery - the dream landscape for fell runners

Climbing is very special. I find it is particularly good for easing back pain, especially upper back pain.  The golden rule of back pain for many syndromes is to move no matter what (never surrender). Backs can be really contorted and mishandled on climbing walls and generally they don't seem to mind. Bad backs like it...they get better, well mine does.

In my mind I'm a fell runner, a long distance ultra marathon runner covering 50 miles a day, me effortlessly jogging along under blue sky and stars...

In truth, the body just isn't having any of it.  It’s hard not to be a fell runner in Chinley, heart of the Peak District, mecca for runners and cyclists and all things outdoors, but in my world the ligaments are too loose to allow any strenuous activity without the joints going out of shape.

Women's Climbing Symposium 2013

Climbing HandsDo you want to climb better?

Then the WCS is for you.  If you don't know about it already, you should.  This year's Women's Climbing Symposium is upon us - taking place on Saturday November 2nd at The Arch Climbing Centre in London 9.30am-6.30pm.  What a great line-up the WCS team have put together for us this year - Angela Soper, Fran Brown, Anne Rigge, Jen Randall, Eva Lopez and Rebecca Dent to name just a few.  They'll be covering everything from nutrition to yoga and training to testing yourself - and all in relation to climbing and at every level - from beginner to competition climbers.

Women's Climbing Symposium 2013

They have a handful of last-minute tickets available (we've heard on the grapevine), so if you log onto the website now, there may be one left just for you.

Climbing Food // Super Duper no-wheat pancake

No Wheat PancakesWhen Rebecca Dent, GB Junior Climbing Team Assistant Manager and high Performance Nutritionist, told me about this recipe I have to confess that I was unsure, but I will give anything a go once and this one has grown on me considerably.  It's so flexible - you can add virtually anything to it to give it a different texture or flavour.  It can be sweet or savoury, which is great if you're in a rush and need quick healthy protein.
