The Reach is my favourite climbing gym in the entire city, except from the fact that it is such a pain to get to! But that does discourage many people from going, which means you do not have to queue for routes, as you do in some other London gyms, and can enjoy your climbing in peace.
The Reach does tend to have quite a few groups of children visiting, so it’s great for your kids, but if you don’t have children the leading walls don’t tend to get very busy either.
There is a great selection of leading walls here with an awesome mix of routes, and recently a new roof project wall was installed, which for me personally is very hard work! Many of the leading routes tend to be overhanging, and the grades are often harder than in some other gyms in London, but that makes for really good training.
There are also plenty of top ropes for beginners, a number of auto-belays, and two bouldering areas. So a good mix.
The staff here are really friendly, the cafe offers really tasty food and value for many (you must try the sweet jacket potato!), and the music mix usually tends to be pretty good
Training for climbing at the Reach
There is a separate training room with some equipment, but it isn’t huge. The climbing floor is very open plan and there is a lot of space in the middle for stretching, but there is no segregated area for this apart from the training room.
