WCS 2016 comes to Manchester

Having great fun at the 2015 Women's Climbing Symposium in Sheffield

Having great fun at the 2015 Women's Climbing Symposium in Sheffield

This is, without a doubt, the best climbing event in the UK.  Organisers of the go-to event for female climbers, the Women's Climbing Symposium, have announced their 2016 venue as Manchester's newest climbing venue: The Depot.  Tickets for this year's Women's Climbing Symposium (WCS), taking place on Saturday 8th October, are now on sale and we are so excited about it!

Where did the Women's Climbing Symposium begin?

In 2011 Shauna Coxsey and her team launched the first Women's Climbing Symposium. Each year since, the event has toured to a different venue, aiming to connect, inspire and develop women’s climbing through collective climbing experiences, the latest research and the best coaching.  Pro-climber, Shauna, who has just bagged a gold medal in the IFSC World Cup representing Great Britain, wanted to respond to the barriers female climbers were experiencing in the sport.  Steph Meysner, at Liverpool's Climbing Hangar, felt the same and together the WCS was created. More recently the fantastic and vibrant Emma Flaherty joined the WCS as Co-Director.  Having just been appointed as BMC Vice President, Emma is pleased to be part of the team making this event super exciting for 2016.

As each year passes the event goes from strength to strength, attracting some of the most exciting, inspiring and skilled women in sport to help ordinary women like us get inspired and ready to enjoy the sport to the fullest.  Speakers so far have included: Catherine Destivelle, Rachel Atherton, Hazel Findlay, Michaela Tracy, Mina Leslie-Wujastyk and Leah Crane.  Workshops are focussed on the things that matter to you, from Dynamic Climbing, to how yoga can help you as a climber, Climbing Nutrition and How to Deal with Awkward Holds.  The workshops are completely practical, hands on and fun, delivered by highly experienced climbing coaches.

This year will be no exception.  The event is set to be an absolutely great opportunity for climbers of all grades to meet other women, feel inspired and get the skills to really progress and get the most from climbing.  Here's what Shauna has to say

WCS Co-Director Shauna Coxsey says: ‘With access to top climbing coaches and leading female figures in sport, it is no surprise that over the last five years the WCS has attracted attendees from all across Europe. We are incredibly excited to bring the event to Manchester this year and will be announcing the full programme over the next few months.’

Depot Manager Tom Newman says: "Depot Manchester are proud to be hosting this year’s Women's Climbing Symposium. We couldn't be happier to be part of such a great event"

Each year tickets have sold out, so whatever your level of climbing, get your tickets to be part of the best UK climbing event of the year.
