Westway is located within the Westway Sports & Fitness gym complex in West London, and offers bouldering, top rope and lead climbing on a variety of walls, including a 17 metre long overhanging ‘comp’ wall.
Westway is the first gym at which I started doing proper lead climbing practice and it has a really good selection of different types of climbing walls for training. It has 350 climbing routes on some 110 roped lines, most of which are around 13.5 metres in length, but some longer – the ‘comp’ wall is 17 metres, so you will ideally need more than a 30 metre rope to do the routes on here. The easiest route on this overhanging wall is a 6b.
Grading at Westway
The grading at Westway feels harder than The Reach or The Castle, and I like this because it prepares you better for outdoor climbing. The routes also feel pretty long and sustained, which again is good training, but this place won’t give you any easy victories! Some of my favourite routes are on the featured wall, which feels a little more like climbing on real rock and is ever so slightly overhanging, adding to the difficulty. This place also has four auto-belay devices and two dedicated bouldering areas.
Bouldering at Westway
The bouldering here is notoriously hard, and the selection is not massive compared to the dedicated bouldering walls, so for me this is primarily a lead climbing gym. The second bouldering area is tucked away round the back, with a bunch of training equipment as well and spare for stretching and floor exercises. This area is particularly well ventilated through two doors, which tend to stay open in the summer – it really helps when you are sweaty from training!
The outdoor experience
There is also an outdoor leading wall (amazing!), which you can climbing if you bring your own quickdraws and check with the staff that they are OK with you going on it beforehand – you will have to be an experienced leader to climb on this wall. The wall is overhanging on one side, with grades starting at 6b+ and right up to 7b, and a slap with only features for holds on the other. Very cool!
Shop & Cafe
The complex also has a substantial climbing shop and a Crussh cafe in the main foyer which is open until 9pm on weekdays, until 7pm on Saturday and 8pm on Sunday – so you won’t go hungry.
Training for climbing at Westway
The training room is located around the back of the climbing wall – keep walking around and you will find it, but it is a little tucked away. It has a campus board, gymnastic rings, Lapis balls, a Beastmaker fingerboard, pull up bars and stretching mats – it is pretty extensive and spacious.
